Algeria has played host to successful peace negotiations between Tuareg rebels and the Malian government, ending almost a year of violent clashes in the desert country that borders Algeria to the southwest. Talks between the two sides were held in the Algerian capital Algiers. The vast Sahara region is believed to be used as a training ground for various rebel groups operating in North Africa, including Algeria's most high profile militant organisation, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
