The Cost Of Corruption

An investigation by the Congolese government has found that US$1.3bn (approximately equal to 18% of GDP) was stolen or lost to corruption and mismanagement between 2006 and 2007 while the transitional government was operating. Based on the investigation's preliminary findings, the government has opened disciplinary proceedings against 53 people. Departments in charge of customs and tax have been implicated, as well as firms and agencies across a range of sectors.
