Assassination Could Complicate Peace Process
August 2008 | Political Risk AlertCircumstances surrounding the death of top Syrian official General Muhammad Suleiman are unclear to say the least, and we hesitate to draw any firm conclusions at this point, except to say that there is a risk that this could complicate peace negotiations with Israel. The general, reportedly Syria's liaison with Lebanese militant group Hizbullah, appears to have been shot dead in a coastal resort near the city of Tartous. Certainly, he was considered important enough for President Bashar al-Assad's brother Maher (who is head of the Republican Guards) to have attended his funeral yesterday, and indeed Bashar himself might well
