July 2008 | Ratings UpdateTurkey has joined the newly formed Union for the Mediterranean which held its inaugural meeting on July 13. This new inter-governmental organization builds off the previous EU-Mediterranean cooperation project known as the 'Barcelona Process' and seeks to increase interaction and dialogue among states in the region. The country's membership of the organisation should prove beneficial over the long term as it serves to increase Turkey's international profile and lay the groundwork for future multilateral free trade negotiations. We caution, however, that in order to prove successful, the organization will have to overcome notable inter-state
