US Decision Acknowledges Improving Security
August 2008 | Political Risk AlertWe recently upped our short-term political risk rating for Yemen from 63.1 to 64.0 based on the improving security situation. As if to underline our view, we note that the US embassy in Sana'a has decided to return its non-essential staff to Yemen. The personnel were removed in March, following a failed mortar attack on the US embassy that was claimed by al-Qaeda. On August 12 Hamza al-Quaiti, the ringleader of the terrorist cell suspected of being responsible for the embassy attack, along with four of his associates were killed by security forces in the eastern governorate of Hadhramaut.
