Bombings Inauspicious Omen For Dialogue
September 2008 | Political Risk AlertWe are not expecting great things from today's national dialogue in Lebanon, with the backdrop of six attempted bombings in Beirut's mainly Sunni Corniche al-Mazraa area being a very negative signal. Attacks in Lebanon are often timed to coincide with political events, and this suggests that there is still strong opposition to the idea of compromise between the two main parties. The agenda of the dialogue is to establish a 'national defence strategy', but the main point of discussion is likely to be the disarmament (or otherwise) of Hizbullah.
