Major Setback To Improving Security Situation
September 2008 | Political Risk AnalysisThe September 17 attack on the US embassy in Sana'a highlights that although the government has recently made significant progress in rounding up suspected al-Qaeda militants, security threats remain. Claiming the lives of 16 people, including six assailants, the attack is one of the most deadly terrorist incidents in recent years. A group calling itself Islamic Jihad in Yemen, which is thought to be an off-shoot of al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility and by September 18 it was reported that 19 people suspected of having links to the attackers had been arrested.
