New UN Sanctions Unlikely Any Time Soon
September 2008 | Political Risk AlertWhile the raison d'ĂȘtre of the meeting of senior officials from the US, the UK, France and Germany in Washington today (September 19) may be to lay the groundwork for a fourth round of UN sanctions against Iran, we cannot see any such measures being approved until early next year at the soonest, if at all. The stumbling blocks are of course UN Security Council permanent members Russia and China. Relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated in the aftermath of the recent Russia-Georgia conflict, and China has always reluctantly gone along with previous rounds of sanctions, so persuading
