Election Elevates Risk
September 2008 | Ratings UpdateIn Zambia, the office of president wields a very large share of political power, though a constitutional reform process is underway, and accordingly political risk remains elevated in the country in the wake of elections. Indeed, on the back of Mwanawasa's stroke and subsequent death, we have lowered the policy continuity risk component of our short-term political risk rating to 60.0 from 70.0. Still, the country retains a relatively high for sub-Saharan Africa short-term political risk rating of 65.0, down from 68.1, reflecting the positive manner in which events have so far played out in the wake of political upheaval.
