Border Dispute Mediator Appointed

On September 17, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of Nicolas Michel, a Swiss legal expert, to the role of specialist adviser and mediator to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea's dispute over the oil-rich island of Mbanie. The countries have referred the dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and representatives were scheduled to meet in September at the UN to finalise their documents for submission to the court. Michel has been involved in the border dispute previously in his role as UN legal counsel. The appointment supports our view that ICJ mediation is likely to proceed
