Perception Of Corruption Increases
September 2008 | Ratings UpdateGiven that 2008 saw the resignation of Tanzania's prime minister and the dismissal of the Bank of Tanzania governor amid corruption allegations, Transparency International's downgrading of Tanzania's score in its 2008 corruptions perceptions index is hardly surprising. The country's score has fallen from 3.2 in 2007 to 3.0 in 2008, and its place has fallen from 94th out of 180 to 102nd. However, in our view, the lower score reflects an increased perception of corruption as high profile scandals are uncovered, rather than a deterioration of the country's corruption profile. We remain optimistic about Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete's campaign against corruption, and view the high profile cases coming to light as progress.
