Tensions Could Spark Unrest
October 2008 | Political Risk AlertHeadlines in Egypt continue to tell of an increasingly tense domestic political situation. In a second sectarian incident this week, a Christian opened fire in the Amiriya neighbourhood of Cairo, killing the Muslim husband of his sister, after she had made public her conversion to Islam. Although we pointed out last week that these incidents happen sporadically, and do not necessarily have any political implications, the violent unrest in the early 1980s was also sparked by a small incident between neighbours. We also note that tensions are high generally, given the economic conditions, with inflation having come in at 23.6%
