Protest Against Municipal Seizures

The seizure and auctioning of houses by Windhoek municipality in a move to reclaim widespread non-payment of municipal bills has aroused public discontent. Residents of Katutura, the poor suburb of Windhoek, have marched to the labour union offices in the centre of town in an effort to secure the support of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW). NUNW has been in negotiations with the municipality to find alternatives to the practice of seizing and auctioning properties to settle outstanding debts, but the city's credit department has recently been criticised for not taking similarly tough action against a number of senior officials and businessmen with unpaid debts.
