Possible Security Deterioration In Lead-Up To Elections

It is not just tensions between Sunnis and Shi'as that pose a risk to stability in Iraq - intra-Shi'a hostility is also rife and yesterday's (October 9) murder of prominent politician Saleh al-Auqaeili, killed in a roadside bomb attack in the Sadr city district of Baghdad, will stoke these hostilities. Auqaeili was a member of Muqtada al-Sadr's political movement, which views Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's relationship with the US as too accommodative. While it is unclear, as yet, who was responsible for the bombing, feeling among Sadrists that they are being targeted because of their opposition to Maliki's Dawa party
