In a bid to increase the number of women in Moroccan politics, the interior ministry has announced plans to offer financial incentives to the parties that field the most female candidates in the June 2009 local elections. Earlier this year, around 1,000 non-governmental organisations promoting women's rights grouped together to launch the 'One Third Campaign', which calls for an amendment to the electoral code that would reserve one third of nominations for municipal councils for female candidates. In the last round of local elections, women won just 0.5% of all seats, or 127 of the 24,000 places up for grabs.
