Uganda In UN Security Council
October 2008 | Ratings UpdateUganda has been elected unopposed to the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member, for a two-year term, beginning 2009. Uganda takes over from South Africa as the representative from Africa, having previously held the position twice - in 1966 and 1981-82 - since joining the UN upon independence in 1962. Beyond the increased international stature that comes with the post, we expect Uganda's presence to maintain the pressure on the Permanent Five to address the regional conflicts such as that in South Sudan. Furthermore, given its importance, Uganda may receive additional aid at a time when aid budgets are vulnerable, as countries seek to win Ugandan support.
