Uncertainty Remains Over Mosul Situation

Reports indicate that the Iraqi government is massing troops in Mosul for what appears to be a forthcoming military operation to pacify the troubled city. It will be the third massive military offensive in the space of a year in the city, which remains the last major urban stronghold of al-Qaeda in Iraq, and success would represent a major breakthrough. This week, the province of Wasit was handed over to Iraqi security forces by the US military, after Babil was similarly transferred last week, and now most of the country is controlled by Iraqis.
