November 2008 | Ratings UpdateWhile some blame al-Qaeda and associated Sunni insurgents, there have been suggestions that Kurdish groups are responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Christians in Mosul, which has forced over 2,000 families to abandon their homes. Eyewitnesses have claimed that all the attacks on Christians happened on the side of the city that is dominated by Kurdish troops, yet the Kurds did nothing to stop them. With provincial elections likely to take place in January 2009, there have been implications that Kurds groups are attempting to alter the ethnic balance of the city in their favour. Baghdad has pushed this line
