Provincial Elections: S-T Risks, L-T Benefits
November 2008 | Political Risk AlertFor the past few months we have pencilled in a January 2009 date for Iraq's delayed provincial elections to finally take place; our expectations were duly confirmed yesterday (November 9) with Baghdad's announcement that they would be held on January 31. The polls will take place in 14 of Iraq's 18 provinces, with local elections for the three Kurdish provinces in the north not due to be held until after March 2009. In addition, Kirkuk province will continue to be administered by the existing multi-communal council.
