Despite Algeria's oil wealth, a lack of job opportunities continues to drive migration by young people to Europe. The latter's tight controls on immigration (which could increase as European unemployment rises) mean that the majority of migrants attempt illegal crossings from Algeria's northern coast to Italy, Spain and France. In November, newspapers were again reporting the disappearance of several would-be emigrants, presumed drowned in the Mediterranean. Algeria scores just two out of ten in the unemployment category of our short-term political risk ratings, although the wider 'social stability' rating has increased to 55.0 (from 50.0) due to lower inflation figures.
