Key ally the US has voiced serious concern about the detention of opposition leader Ayman Nour, the presidential runner-up convicted in December of forgery charges that some say were politically motivated. According to an editorial in US newspaper the Washington Post, the US government withdrew an invitation to an Egyptian trade delegation in protest at Nour’s treatment, although Egyptian officials deny this. On the positive side, US Vice-President Dick Cheney did include Egypt in his January Middle East tour.
