Sahara Report Welcome
May 2006 | Ratings UpdateUN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s report on the Western Sahara dispute has called on all parties to negotiate under UN auspices to reach a compromise solution. The report effectively kills off the proposal of Annan’s former envoy on the matter, James Baker, which called for an eventual independence referendum. It therefore represents a victory for Morocco, which welcomed it and interpreted calls for compromise as endorsements of its own favoured autonomy solution, which the US is reported to have swung behind. Meanwhile the Saharawi independence movement rejected the report and threatened a return to violence.
