July 2006 | Ratings UpdateThe replacement of Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahya by Abdelaziz Belkhadem in May poses a risk to future political reforms and stability. Ouyahya was moved after resisting attempts by President Bouteflika to extend his tenure by changing the constitution. With his appointment, Belkhadem has promised that his key priorities are amending the constitution and raising salaries. Such populist moves are a threat to the long-term political stability in Algeria, in transition followings years of civil war in the 1990s.
