Democracy has taken hold firmly since the end of the brutal civil war 13 years ago but problems remain. The main opposition RENAMO party remains glued to a confrontational style of politics, which is sometimes taken too far by its supporters. Patronage and corruption are still much in evidence, and the legal system remains unfair and inefficient. Even though most agree that it will take many years to overcome these hurdles, underlying political stability is not at risk.
