The domestic political situation is stable overall, but is still plagued by the squabbles that have long been the norm both within and between the ruling Frelimo and opposition Renamo parties. However, both sides are starting to position themselves ahead of a crowded electoral calendar over the next three years. Provincial elections are set for 2007, municipal polls for 2008, with parliamentary and presidential elections in 2009. The local and regional elections could be unpleasant in some areas, as before, but should be free and fair, while at the national level, it will be a tough task for Renamo to unseat Frelimo.
