Frelimo Gears Up For December Election

February 2009 | Ratings Update

The ruling Frelimo party has confirmed President Armando Guebuza as its candidate for December's presidential election. His main opponent will almost certainly be Afonso Dhlakama of Renamo, who has already failed several times to get elected. In 2004, Frelimo won 64% of the vote and Renamo 30%, and a similar outcome is expected this time around. Renamo's main problem is that it has failed to move beyond its narrow regional power base into a party with national appeal with policy options substantially different to Frelimo. Election campaigns in Mozambique usually generate a degree of political violence, and Renamo typically reacts to defeat by alleging electoral fraud. While not perfect, in reality elections are generally free and fair.
