Accusations Of Voter Trafficking
March 2009 | Ratings UpdateAs Botswana's political parties start to position themselves ahead of the general election later in the year, the incumbent Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and second opposition party, the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) have been accusing each other of vote trafficking. Both parties have denied the charges, but local media are reporting several suspicious voter registration attempts. Although the ruling BDP has a large majority, the stakes have been raised considerably by the fragile economic situation, which increases the risk on all sides of attempted electoral fraud.
