May 2009 | Ratings UpdateThe United Nations Security Council has given its unanimous support to informal talks on the future of Western Sahara, ahead of a resumption in formal peace negotiations between the Moroccan state and the Western Saharan independence movement. The resolution adopted by the council extends the mission of the UN peace keeping force (which currently numbers 500 troops) by another year. However, it rejected calls from some member states for human rights monitors to be deployed as part of the mission. Four rounds of UN-led peace talks were held in 2007-08 but with little effect.
