Amnesty Risks Entrenching Government Impunity

The re-election of Abdelaziz Bouteflika as president of Algeria passed without any major surprises: as expected, Bouteflika won a landslide, with more than 90% of the popular vote, while the opposition claimed fraud and vote rigging. Peace and reconciliation remains a cornerstone of Bouteflika's political programme, but we highlight risks that this could be provoking increasing resentment among those affected by government-sanctioned violence during the civil war.
