June 2009 | Risk SummaryThe Angolan authorities have recently invested US$13mn to increase military patrols along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in a bid to reduce diamond smuggling. The enhanced security measures are also aimed at halting the flow of illegal immigrants into Angola - the nation attracts people from as far away as Senegal. Although the two countries are strong regional allies, the neighbours have been at loggerheads over their 2,000km border. The DRC has repeatedly accused Angolan troops of trespassing onto its territory.
