Former mines minister of Cameroon, Alphonse Siyan Siewe, alongside two aides, has had his 30-year sentence for corruption extended to a life sentence. Siyam Siewe was initially jailed in 2006 as part of 'Operation Sparrowhawk', which was launched in the same year to crack down on graft. Cameroon continues to be ranked towards the bottom of Transparency International's corruptions perceptions index, coming in at 141st out of 180 countries in 2008, and critics say the anti-corruption campaign is being used to persecute enemies of President Paul Biya and his allies.
