Egypt's short-term political risk rating of 63.5 reflects the government's firm hold on political stability, in conjunction with a number of threats that could get out of hand if this ever breaks down. These include economic disparities - relatively high levels of poverty and unemployment, and a rapidly expanding population - and a not unrelated high level of sympathy for the (illegal) opposition Muslim Brotherhood. In addition, the government's friendly relations with the US and Israel are highlight unpopular, and the question of succession to President Hosni Mubarak (who has been in power since 1982) is somewhat uncertain.
