Two of those charged are Tunisian air force officers, stationed in the city of Bizerte, and are accused of smuggling weapons from the air base with the intention of launching an attack. The US and Tunisia conduct annual joint military exercises, focusing on counter-terrorism training. The suspects are expected to stand trial in August. A lawyer for some of the suspects is reported to have claimed that they offered confessions only under duress from the security services.
