Judicious Verdict On Judiciary
July 2009 | Ratings UpdateA report published by the Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA) generally concurs with the good rating for governance that Botswana has received from international bodies such as the World Bank, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, World Economic Forum and Transparency International. It has, however, raised doubts as to the impartiality of some judges, citing examples of conflicts of interest and the use of executive orders to override previous rulings. Despite some isolated cases, the judiciary is judged to be generally independent of interference from the executive and legislature, which generally accept their decisions.
