Mauritius has said it will expel 6,000 male Bangladeshis from its shores by the end of 2009, supposedly to help bring down Mauritian unemployment in the hard-hit textile industry (where 4,000 of the Bangladeshi workers are employed). The government has given no official reason for the expulsion, merely stating 'it is a government decision. We are going to ensure that they receive all their dues before leaving.' Trade union officials stated they would fight the government for compensation, and complained that local people are not interested in textile work since the government made it easier to hire and fire
