President Suspends BDP Secretary
August 2009 | Ratings UpdateThe power struggle within the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is intensifying, with the suspension for of party secretary general, Gomolemo Motswaledi, by President Ian Khama. According to the BDP constitution, the party president is able to suspend members for up to 60 days in advance of a disciplinary hearing. Motswaledi was suspended for criticising a press release from a law firm that cleared President Khama of charges that he has been acting unilaterally in the running of BDP affairs. We would expect further attempts to curtail the influence of rival Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe faction as the elections approach.
