Maliki's Position In Danger?

Political manoeuvring ahead of national parliamentary elections scheduled for January 2010 is well underway, and it appears that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's position beyond those polls is under growing threat. On August 24, major Shi'a parties announced the formation of the National Iraqi Alliance (NIA), a successor to the United Iraqi Alliance (UIA), which won 128 out of 275 seats in 2005's parliamentary elections. The NIA comprises five Shi'a religious parties, including the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) and the Sadrists.
