Maliki's Position In Danger?
August 2009 | Political Risk AnalysisPolitical manoeuvring ahead of national parliamentary elections scheduled for January 2010 is well underway, and it appears that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's position beyond those polls is under growing threat. On August 24, major Shi'a parties announced the formation of the National Iraqi Alliance (NIA), a successor to the United Iraqi Alliance (UIA), which won 128 out of 275 seats in 2005's parliamentary elections. The NIA comprises five Shi'a religious parties, including the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) and the Sadrists. The only significant difference between the NIA and the UIA is that Maliki's Da'wa Party declined to join
