Many of the government's recent infrastructure contracts have been awarded to Chinese firms, who often bring large numbers of Chinese construction workers with them. This has created tension with local residents, angry at the lack of job opportunities created by government projects, at a time when unemployment remains in double digits. A mass brawl in early August between Algerians and Chinese immigrants in the capital Algiers illustrates these tensions.
