The Mauritian government is planning to purchase 20,000 hectares of Mozambican farmland, in a bid to increase food security. In the 2008/09 budget, Mauritius set apart MUR1.0bn (US$31.5mn) as a food security fund, which is to be spent on, among other things, securing farmland in other countries.
