The Mauritian government is planning to purchase 20,000 hectares of Mozambican farmland, in a bid to increase food security. In the 2008/09 budget, Mauritius set apart MUR1.0bn (US$31.5mn) as a food security fund, which is to be spent on, among other things, securing farmland in other countries. So far Mozambique has earmarked 5,000 hectares for the country, while another 15,000 are under discussion.
