The World Bank has said that Tanzania needs to do more to prove its aversion to impunity for corrupt officials. Observers have criticised Tanzania's anti-graft efforts for focussing on petty corruption while turning a blind eye to major incidents involving higher profile individuals. Recent actions against senior officials accused of large scale corruption seem to indicate that the authorities are taking a firmer stand against offenders, regardless of their stature. Indeed, President Jakaya Kikwete has stated that Tanzania's anti-corruption agency will bring several cases to court in the near future, as part of the country's ongoing drive to eradicate corruption.
