Government officials from Syria and Iraq already appear to be smoothing over the cracks exposed by their recent diplomatic dispute. Tensions certainly remain, and Iraq's accusation that Syria is facilitating insurgent attacks across their shared border will set back diplomatic relations, which were only restored in 2006. While Syria has denied any involvement in bomb attacks in Baghdad on August 19, which targeted several government ministries and killed almost 100 people, its failure to prevent militants slipping across its borders could prove a major sticking point in talks with the US.
