September 2009 | Risk SummarySaudi King Abdullah conducted a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad on September 23 in Jeddah. The meeting lasted for over two hours and was reported to be entirely focused on bilateral issues, although many suspect it to have related to the political paralysis in Lebanon. This was the first meeting between the two leaders since March, and it is believed that a thawing of the tensions between them would be very good news for regional stability in general. However, mutual suspicion will remain in place, given Syria's alliance with Saudi Arabia's regional rival Iran.
