President Omar al-Bashir in September 2009 ordered an end to state censorship of the media, according to officials. Editors cautiously welcomed the news, although some said that they were still likely to face pressure over sensitive stories. In recent years, journalists have complained of regular censorship. Indeed, some have been regularly visited by security officers, who have checked and sometimes removed articles ahead of publication, in spite of constitutional guarantees of a free media. Editors say that print-runs were seized, especially when writers tried to cover controversial subjects such as the Darfur conflict.
