MMD Loses By-Election

November 2009 | Ratings Update

The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has suffered a double setback as the opposition PF/UPND pact candidate, Watson Lumba, secured victory in the November by-election that followed the death of Solwezi MP and Local Government and Housing Minister, Benny Tetamanshimba. With a winning margin of 27%, the victory for the opposition could herald another close contest as the parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections. The incumbent MMD now holds 73 seats in the 158-member Assembly, to 72 for the combined Patriotic Front/ United Party for National Development alliance.
