Egypt has recently stepped up its involvement in the Arab-Israeli peace process. Egyptian and French leaders met in Paris to discuss prospects for a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians by 2010. The Egyptian government is keen to polish its image as a peace broker in the eyes of the largely pro-Palestinian Egyptian public ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections. The regime is sensitive to accusations from members of the Islamist opposition of being too friendly with the Jewish state. At the same time, Egypt has begun construction on a metal wall along its border with the Gaza strip
