The closure of US, UK, and French embassies in early January over continuing threats from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula highlights the growing concern over Sana'a's ability to deal with its myriad internal challenges. The fear among Western and neighbouring governments is that the collapse of state authority in Yemen could create a safe haven for militant groups who would use the territory as a launching pad for attacks throughout the region and further afield.
