No Long Lunch

As part of a new government drive to improve efficiency in the Gabonese economy, in early January workers gave up their traditional two-hour lunch breaks. Under a government ruling, the working day now starts at 7.30am and finishes at 3.30pm, with a 30 minute break to be taken between 11.30am and 1.30pm; previously, work started later in the morning, and, after returning from lunch, employees would leave around 6.00pm. The change has been unpopular in some quarters, with lawyers, for example, having argued that it is difficult for them to stop working in the afternoon.
