The unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% in Q309, from 7.7% in Q209. Although real GDP growth returned to positive territory in Q209, the Q409 unemployment figure could be higher still given that it is traditionally a lagging indicator of a recovery in economic activity. We forecast an end-2010 unemployment rate of 7.8%.
