Government Oil Deals Under Scrutiny

At the time of writing, Minister of Energy and Minerals Development Hilary Onek was preparing to brief the Ugandan parliament on the government's dealings with international oil companies. Although the government has previously stated its desire to see a major international oil company involved in the development of its downstream sector, it has not provided parliament with any details about the terms of potential deals. This has fostered a sense of distrust among local lawmakers, who fear the government may be acting against the country's best interests. In our view, the decision on which companies are granted access to Uganda's oilfields will ultimately be taken by the president.
