Tensions With Buganda Kingdom On The Rise
February 2010 | Ratings UpdateIn a sign of rising political tensions in Uganda, King Ronald Mutebi II of Buganda Kingdom has been pressing for a move towards federalism. According to a spokesperson for the Kingdom, increasing levels of corruption can be partially attributed to the heavy concentration power in the central government. Calls for decentralisation are unlikely to sit well with President Yoweri Museveni, who has been holding a tight grip on power and will be reluctant to see his authority diminished. Nevertheless, the dominant position of the Baganda people in the economy means that Museveni must be careful not to alienate them ahead of 2011 elections.
